One of the nicest rifles I've ever shot was a sporterized 6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser. My friend had taken many deer with this rifle and after shooting it I understood why. The gunsmith (note that I emphasize gunsmith - not something you attempt at home) who had done the work had done an impeccable job, including a silky smooth trigger job. I am not the greatest shot in the world by any stretch of the imagination. But, this rifle was forgiving and even made me look good. There is something about using the components of an old rifle to build something that is every bit as good as something rolling off the assembly line today that is really appealing.
There are plenty of people that knew the same thing my friend did. The 6.5 x 55 is a great deer cartridge. This article does a great job explaining why the 6.5 x 55 is such an accurate cartridge.
I guess the only thing to remember is that factory loads of the 6.5 x 55 are not always easy to come by. So if you are heading off to a remote location to go hunting it might be tough to find factory ammo if you suddenly run low.
Here are some modern rifles chambered in 6.5 x 55:
CZ 550
CZ 550 FS
