.380 caliber pocket pistols - where's the ammo?
Obviously, we all know about the shortage of ammo around the country. In my neck of the woods we are finally beginning to see .223 and 9mm returning to the shelves, but that's about it. And that's a problem, because the industry has spent a ton of money developing, marketing, and writing about the large crop of .380 mouse guns. I can only imagine just how frustrating it must be to have waited for a Ruger LCP, only to find plinking and self-defense ammo literally non-existent.
A quick check of Cabelas, Sportsman's Guide and Cheaper than Dirt all yielded a big fat zero for .380 back ordered until December. I thought I had struck gold when I found a 100 round box of .380 plinking ammo in a corner of the basement.
Even .45 ammo is tough to come buy in any larger amounts. Which brings me back to the caliber I choose the most often when buying a pistol. 9mm. In this ammo crunch it's proven to be the only caliber I can find with any consistency and I don't freak out if I shoot 100 or so rounds every once in awhile.
So I plan to concentrate on pistols in 9mm in future posts. Mainly because I know folks searching for a pistol to buy visit this site for info and I'd actually like to see them buy something they can actually shoot occasionally.
I'm not telling you to avoid the .380 caliber, just be aware that ammo is going to be darn tough to find. And if you have a chance to get in bulk, do it.
