.380 caliber pocket pistols - where's the ammo?

Obviously, we all know about the shortage of ammo around the country. In my neck of the woods we are finally beginning to see .223 and 9mm returning to the shelves, but that's about it.  And that's a problem, because the industry has spent a ton of money developing, marketing, and writing about the large crop of .380 mouse guns.  I can only imagine just how frustrating it must be to have waited for a Ruger LCP, only to find plinking and self-defense ammo literally non-existent.

A quick check of Cabelas, Sportsman's Guide and Cheaper than Dirt all yielded a big fat zero for .380 back ordered until December.  I thought I had struck gold when I found a 100 round box of .380 plinking ammo in a corner of the basement.

Even .45 ammo is tough to come buy in any larger amounts.  Which brings me back to the caliber I choose the most often when buying a pistol.  9mm.  In this ammo crunch it's proven to be the only caliber I can find with any consistency and I don't freak out if I shoot 100 or so rounds every once in awhile.

So I plan to concentrate on pistols in 9mm in future posts.  Mainly because I know folks searching for a pistol to buy visit this site for info and I'd actually like to see them buy something they can actually shoot occasionally.

I'm not telling you to avoid the .380 caliber, just be aware that ammo is going to be darn tough to find.  And if you have a chance to get in bulk, do it.

SIG SP2022 holsters

Not too long ago I wrote a review on the SIG SP2022.  After I bought the SP2022 I thought I might be stuck using a Galco FLETCH holster I had for an XD .45 as there just wasn't much that I was finding in the way of holsters.  Since the writing of the review, I started to run across more holster options so I thought I share them here.

Bersa Concealed Carry .380

I've already written some posts about the Bersa Thunder .380 here, here and here. So it's pretty apparent I really like this little pistol.  In fact, I like it so much that I've been closely looking at the concealed carry version of the same pistol.  The Bersa Concealed Carry is a slimmed down version of the Thunder .380 with all of the sharp corners rounded off and low profile sights.

Here is what the manufacturer says about the Bersa Concealed Carry:

The ultimate compact .380 D.A. Pistol. Weighing only 23 oz., this is the perfect .380 D.A. you want for personal protection. It's slim, trim and always ready for immediate action.

It out-performs, out-features and out prices all others in it's class. Compare against all other .380's.. nothing even comes close to this Thunder .380. Absolutely nothing. BERSA gives you the most value for your shooting dollar.

SOURCE/PHOTOS: http://www.bersafirearmsusa.com/detail_bersa380cc.php
The Bersa Concealed Carry holds 8 rounds of .380.  The grip fits the hand nicely and feels balanced.  The Bersa could be carried in a front pants pocket although it would probably be more at home in a IWB holster.  One nice safety feature on the pistol is a loaded chamber indicator.  About the only real negative thing to say about this little pistol is that the magazines are not interchangeable with the Thunder .380 and at the time of this writing, .380 ammo can be very difficult to locate.
Here is additional information on the Bersa CC:

SIG P238 Range Reviews and Owner Feedback

I covered the SIG P238 in an earlier post this year.  I was really excited about the release of this little .380 because I figured it was about as close to a Colt Mustang as I was going to get.  At the time I wrote the post the gun had just surfaced on Gunbroker.com.  At that time it could be had at about $525.  At the time of this writing the SIG P238 is listed in some no reserve auctions with starting bids of $300.  So you can probably get the pistol for a bit less now.

The SIG P238 has experienced a recall for something they are calling a Safety upgrade.  This is a precautionary recall and according to the SIG site there have been no mishaps.

So now that the SIG P238 has been out for awhile what are folks saying about this little .380?  I scoured the web to find some firsthand reports.  Hopefully, this information will help you as you research a potential purchase of the SIG P238

Colt Delta Elite

The pictures below are of a Colt Delta Elite 1911 10mm.  This is a really nice semi-auto pistol and like just about any 10mm a bit of a handful to shoot.  But, once you get used to the recoil the Colt Delta Elite is an enjoyable gun to take to the range.  Ammo isn't cheap, and then there is the debate about the practicality of a 10mm pistol.

The Colt Delta Elite could definitely be used as a concealed carry weapon although you do read the occasional story about the difficulty you run into defending the use of such a large caliber for self defense.  This is an older model of the Delta Elite, but Colt reintroduced this gun at the 2008 Shot Show.

Here's what Colt has to say about their new release of the gun:
With the return of the Colt Delta Elite® pistol, the time-tested Colt Government Model® is once again available in 10mm. Colt was one of the original pioneers in adapting a combat pistol to the potent 10mm cartridge, and the first to successfully manufacture a 10mm caliber pistol in the United States. The Colt Delta Elite pistol had been a favorite amongst combat shooters, and offered the power to hunt medium size game in the legendary M1911-style pistol. The Delta Elite 10mm offers near 41 Magnum ballistics in a semi-automatic pistol.

Built by American Craftsman, this winning combination of an 8 + 1 capacity full size handgun with 10mm ballistics marks the return of the Delta Elite.

The newest edition of the Colt Delta Elite is true to the original design, with a forged stainless steel frame, slide, slide stop, and barrel. Features such as Wrap Around Rubber Grips with Delta Medallions, White Dot Sights, Arched Main-Spring Housing, Combat Hammer, and 80 Series Firing System give the Delta Elite the winning combination of proven capability, endurance and classic appearance that is sure to appeal to the handgun enthusiast and retro collector alike.
